At some point early every year, Americans begin scrambling to figure out what tax forms they must file, and when they must file them.

What If You Miss a Date?

You'll probably be hit with a moderate financial penalty, if only an extra interest charge, if you don't submit your return and any payment due on that return by the deadline. But the IRS should accept your money and your tax return and that will be the end of it unless there's another problem.

What Is a Tax Extension?

If you are wondering what is involved with filing an extension, it’s actually a very simple process. Typically, your income tax returns would be due in April each but requesting a 6-month extension gives you more time to file.

To request an extension, you'd need to submit Form 4868 by the regular filing date of April 15. You don't have to give a reason for requesting an extension. The IRS will review your request and in the majority of cases, grant you extra time to file provided you meet the eligibility requirements.
